This is a media room from start to finish. I started with an empty room and worked with the homeowner and Matt Mathis from The Home Theater Gallery to design a proper balance of aesthetics and functionality. The end result turned out magnificently!
The detail of the barrel ceiling can be seen under the barrel ceiling tab, but that was the starting point. I removed the existing splayed ceiling and installed the barreled ceiling, cove, and flipped the doors around (from opening in to opening out). After my initial construction was done, Matt went to work on the star field. Matt and his guys installed the star field, which was carefully planned and mapped out to be the exact star placement on the birth date of the lady of the house. Matt also was in charge of the RGB cove lighting that is able to shine at different shades and reflect differently off of the clouds to portray different times of day and weather. The sky scene was painted by Robb.
After the ceiling was completed, I cut the curve in the step of the room to accommodate the curved seating and added a custom solid red oak stair tread and riser and framed out the equipment cabinet. From there, I built and installed the pillar boxes and added crown moulding and custom chair rail. Finally the proscenium was built. I built the stage on site and the center cabinet, curved valence, and pillars in my shop. The valence is the same curvature as the stage, which mirrors the curvature of the seating. After the proscenium was in, I was able to install the baseboards around the entire room. Finally, everything was stained and painted.
At last, it was time for the final touches. I built the door for the equipment cabinet – wood rails and stiles with a ¼’’ black tinted glass panel supported by 4 Blum face mount euro-style hinges. At the same time, I constructed the speaker covers to go on the pillars/proscenium and acoustic panels for the walls to absorb some of the magnificent sound blaring from the speakers! I hope you enjoy the photos as much as I enjoyed crafting this room!
